Preparations are in full swing for the Community and Family Raceday at Naas Racecourse on Bank Holiday 4thof June. The family day is sponsored by Storm Cinema (Naas) & UCI Cinema (Newbridge). Traditionally a great day out for all the family, this years meeting will have all the old favourite attractions, including go karts, bouncy castles and the kid’s club which includes crèche facilities. All attractions are FREE. An array of kids spot prizes will also be on offer. The main prize is a voucher for a Mountain Bike and runner up prizes of Bowling Vouchers, Storm Cinema Passes, Barker & Jones Books, Playbarn Vouchers & much much more. Local musician Derek Cunningham will provide the pre race entertainment with his lively jazz music!
The June Bank Holiday race day is Naas’s headline meeting of the Summer Flat Programme, featuring the Coolmore Stud Sprint Stakes for two year old fillies listed Race. This year’s renewal has attracted significant English interest with Richard Hannon and Mick Channon expected to challenge for the €44,000 first prize. After a memorable meeting at the Curragh last weekend the Channon yard will saddle Effie B. Equitania, and Sky Lantern could go to post to represent Richard Hannon, whose horses are just coming into form ahead of Royal Ascot. The home challenge for the Naas feature will be understandably very strong. Nandiga and Delight first and second in a decent Curragh Maiden last week end may line up for Patrick Prendergast and Aiden O’Brien respectively. David Wachman’s True Verdict is sure to be a leading contender after an eye catching second over course and distance on the 16th of May.
The Listed Alfred Nobel Rochestown Stakes was run at Naas for the first time in 2011 and produced a stallion prospect in the shape of Lilbourne Lad, who now stands at Rathbarry Stud. UK trainer Rod Millman will add further English interest, as his colt Yes Two will take part along with colts from the Channon and Hannon yards. They may all be resigned to battling for place money as Jim Bolgers Dawn Approach looks like the one to beat. A very impressive course and distance winner here three weeks ago, Monday’s race looks like an idea opportunity ahead of Royal Ascot.
The first Black Type event on the card is the Owenstown Stud Stakes over seven furlongs. It looks like a very open contest with eleven horses rated within 10 pounds of each other. The most improved horse in the field this season is Tom Hogan’s Gordon Lord Byron, with a little ease in the ground his connections would be hopeful of striking at Stakes level.
