Hector O’hEochagain is confirmed as the master of ceremonies for the 2013 Jockey Olympics at the paddypower.com Cheltenham Trial Day on Sunday 24th February at Naas Racecourse. All money raised on the day will be donated to the Injured Jockeys Fund.
The competition will incorporate three events – an egg and spoon race, a three-legged race and a relay race where Jockeys will replace the baton for a whip.
Barry Geraghty, Davy Russell and Paul Carberry have been announced as the three team captains. The teams include:
Barry Geraghty’s Team: Paul Townend, Robert (Puppy) Power & Bryan Cooper
Paul Carberry’s Team: Davy Condon, Niall ‘Slippers’ Madden & Nina Carberry
Davy Russell’s Team: Mark Walsh, Tom Doyle & Andrew Lynch
Hector O’hEochagain, MC for the Jockey Olympics said: “Jockeys are some of the most competitive sports people I know, so I’m keen to push them to their limits and see how they adapt their skills to the egg and spoon race, the three-legged race and the relay. It’s going to be great craic to see the jockeys completely out of their comfort zones.”
Jockey Barry Geraghty said: “My team and I have won the Jockey Olympics for the last two years in a row so we won’t be happy with anything less than a hat-trick this year. I’ve studied the form of Paul and Davy’s teams and I’m confident that my team have all the skills to win. It’s always a good day’s racing too – the jump racing is top-notch and this meeting always manages to produce a few horses to follow for Cheltenham or Aintree.
Tom Ryan, Manager of Naas Racecourse said: “We are delighted to be involved with the Jockey Olympics this year again; our Team Captains Barry, Paul and Davy are masters of their own game so I’m looking forward to seeing them adapt their talents to our Olympic challenges. I hope a huge crowd turns out to support the Injured Jockeys Fund, and cheer on their favourite team for what should be a unique raceday.
On the racing side, Felix Yonger, winner of The Paddypower.com Novice Hurdle was second in The Neptune Investments Management Hurdle at Cheltenham and Seabass, the winner of The Paddypower.com Steeplechase, came third in the Aintree Grand National. Other races on the card supporting the Paddypower Cheltenham Trial Day are also of a high standard with Rathlin, winner of the Woodlands Park 100 Club Novice Chase, coming second to Flemenstar in the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse”.
